Who is William Molina Cestari?
Venezuelan cellist William Molina Cestari studied at the Paris Conservatory and perfected his skills with Frans Helmerson, Natalia Gutman and Mstislav Rostropovich.
He has been first cello of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jalisco, the Orchestra of the Paris Conservatory, the Orchestra of the European Community and the Simón Bolívar Orchestra.
His repertoire spans different periods in the history of music. In Latin America he premiered Sergei Prokofiev's Sinfonia concertante, and has toured internationally performing and conducting simultaneously works by Vivaldi, Bach, Tartini, Paganini, Haydn and Boccherini.
He has worked under the baton of conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Leonard Bernstein, Eduardo Mata, Carlos Chávez, Claudio Abbado, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Seiji Osawa, Simon Ratle, Pierre Boulez and Eduardo Rahn.
He is co-founder of El Sistema de Orquestas Infantiles y Juveniles de Venezuela, and created the Academia Latinoamericana de Violonchelo, where he has promoted the formation of a new generation of young cellists.
What is the interpretative style of William Molina, principal cello of Minería?
Within virtuosity, it is common to find specialties. That is to say: instrumentalists focused on mastering a specific period or style within the history of music. William Molina's virtuosity, on the other hand, travels freely through the cello literature. He moves back and forth between centuries with agglutinating spirit and disconcerting ease: from Tartini to Piazzolla, Haydn to Prokofiev. He is a timeless interpreter, capable of tackling Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, Modernism or radical ways of articulating sounds with the same fluidity and technical perfection. Therefore, we are talking about his virtuosity being of the broadest and most complex type that can be found: an expressive virtuosity.
Where can I see/listen to William Molina with Minería?
During the third program of the 2019 Summer Season, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, with William Molina as soloist, gave its Mexican premiere of Antidotum Tarantulae XXIa concerto for two cellos and orchestra by Giovanni Sollima (1962), who played the second solo instrument.
It is a work that explores (from an eclectic position, which has been framed by some specialists in the postminimalist current) the rhythm and the idea of the "tarantella", an ancient dance created with the aim of freeing the body by dancing from the poison inflicted by the bite of a tarantula.

On Wednesday, March 22 at the Nezahualcóyotl Concert Hall, William Molina will perform the soloist part of Edward Elgar's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería conducted by Carlos Miguel Prieto.
It is interesting to know that during the First World War (1914-1918) the English composer Edward Elgar (1857-1934) was convinced that Europe would never be the same again and that destruction would be permanently installed in his spirit. That is why during the war period he composed under a state of despondency and melancholy whose maximum expression is his Cello Concerto (begun at the end of the war and premiered in 1919), which has gone down in the history of music as a beautiful and sad farewell to a world forever lost.
