To begin with, as a continuation of 45 years of musical excellence.
45 years in which our orchestra's recordings have received five Grammy nominations, won a Latin Grammy, and made us the first Mexican orchestra to record with the legendary Deutsche Grammophon label.
Making excellent music was, is and always will be the meaning of our existence. It is the foundation, not only that gives us meaning, but on which our very reason for being is built.
In the Mining Symphony Orchestra we understand that excellence is constant renewal.
We orchestras are obliged to decipher them and undertake intelligent and strategic transformations that allow us to adopt new appearances that allow us to approach different audiences.
And the beginning is the image.
A new visual identity
That is why an essential aspect of our new era is an aesthetic transformation that ranges from our logo to the color palette of all our visual communication.
Let's think about the most traditional orchestras in the world: Berlin, Vienna, Chicago or New York. What do they have in common besides their tradition of excellence? They are orchestras that constantly change and revolutionize their logo.
And the revolution of our logo in this new era has to do with the mining essence that gives origin to our history. With searching the depths to extract diamonds. With the adventurous effort in the name of beauty.
In the words of Juan Carlos Fernández Espinosa, architect of this new visual identity, the new image of Minería has to do with:
"The earth and its rearrangements, with the richness and beauty of its geological layers captured in the cut of a quartz or in the escarpment of a mountain... Music and its changes in dynamics, harmony, modulation and contrast...".
Our new era bets on a free form, full of movement, which is a mirror of contemporary sensibility, where the old boundaries between genres and sound hierarchies have been dissolved.
A new institutional sound identity
This institutional image has a direct sound echo:
Based on the new visual identity, Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz, one of the most relevant composers in the world, composed a piece to celebrate it. This emotional and explosive work was recorded by the Sinfónica de Minería and can be heard on the home page of our orchestra's official website.
And what does Carlos Miguel Prieto, artistic director, think about this new era?
"The Sinfónica de Minería is an ensemble that is not afraid to combine a legendary traditional symphony with a work that has a super contrasting language. Our new era is not afraid to include classical soloists and crossover soloists ."
The symbolic beginning of this new era
The symbolic beginning of this new era to be discovered took place on January 22, 2024 at the Nezahualcóyotl Concert Hall with a concert comprised of works that represent three of the foundational axes of our project that are still in force:
- Clara by Gabriela Ortiz as a reaffirmation of our commitment to permanently commission and premiere music written by Mexican people.
- The orchestral suite of the ballet El amor brujo by Manuel de Falla as a reaffirmation of our commitment to perform monumental works (in terms of orchestral dimension) and of high technical demand that are infrequent in the programming of Mexican orchestras.
- Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Heroic, as a reaffirmation of our commitment to interpret the great milestones of music history with a sound of excellence.
In the Minería Symphony Orchestra we have begun a new era and, in the words of our president, Luis Antonio Ascencio Almada, president of the Music Academy of the Palacio de Minería, we invite you to discover it with us:
"We have much to tell - much to sing - and with this new voice and harmony we will remain current and propositional to always remain the orchestra that dares to play when no one else plays, what no one else plays, and that plays like no one else."
