The Minería Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce that we have been nominated for three Latin Grammy Awards in 2023 for our participation in the album «Estirpe» (Deutsche Grammophon; 2022) by Pacho Flores, conducted by Carlos Miguel Prieto.
A Grammy is a symbol of international musical excellence. The fact that our work has been recognized with such an honor confirms that we have remained true to our principles for over 45 years. In 1978, for the inaugural season, Jorge Velazco invited León Spierer, concertmaster of the Von Karajan´s Berlin Philharmonic, to lay the foundations for an excellent orchestral sound.
The three categories in which we have been nominated are:
- “Best Classical Music Album”
- “Best Classical Composition” for Paquito D’Rivera’s Concierto venezolano
- “Best Arrangement for Daniel Freiberg’s” Crónicas latinoamericanas
From a historical perspective, this triple Grammy nomination is a beautiful recognition of three essential pillars that have guided our musical work for over four and a half decades:
- The commitment to commissioning new music from Latin American composers.
- The programming of summer seasons with an orchestra composed of the most outstanding performers from the best Mexican symphonic orchestras.
- The frequent presence of the best international soloists in our concerts.
This is evident in the very nature of our multi-nominated album. Estirpe is intended to expand the Latin American repertoire for trumpet with specific commissions to:
- Arturo Márquez (Concierto de otoño)
- Daniel Freiberg (Crónicas latinoamericanas)
- Paquito D’Rivera (Concierto venezolano)
- Efraín Oscher (Mestizo)
- Pacho Flores (Morocota)
These five Latin American composers (Mexican, Argentine, Cuban, Uruguayan, and Venezuelan, respectively) have captivated the world, and the Grammy jury, with their overflowing imagination for articulating symphonic sound discourses in the service of the endless Latin poetics. so rhythmic, chromatic and expressive. Additionally, each work shares the characteristic of having been written for the best trumpet player in the world: Pacho Flores.
That Minería is three times nominated for a Grammy is a milestone that extends to many places:
- To our audience, who for 45 years has turned our Temporadas de verano at the Sala Nezahualcóyotl into an authentic cultural tradition in Ciudad de México.
- To all professional orchestras in México, whose best performers from summer to summer gather at Minería to offer excellent classical music.
- To Latin American contemporary music, which with its vigor, roots, and beauty has gradually filtered into the programming and imagination of concert halls and music lovers around the world.
The Minería Symphony Orchestra is an institution that represents México and all of Latin America in the world. This triple Grammy nomination only reaffirms our commitment to musical excellence and to share Latin American music.
Celebrate this great achievement with us!
